10Best food we ate in VietnamWe were so delighted to find this vegetarian restaurant! During our visit to Vietnam, we wanted to eat local cuisine, rather than resort to the Western offerings of pizza and Burger King that were available. However, by the time we reached Hue, we'd had some rather dreary meals, just to be sure there was no pork or prawns lurking in our salads and noodles. Stumbling upon Hoa Nghiem on a busy main thoroughfare, we initially just felt relieved to find a dedicated vego restaurant with a menu that seemed a bit more interesting than the typical "rice, fruit, fried egg" options we'd been subsisting on. There was only one other table occupied on the 2 times we ate there, which was admittedly very early in the evening. To respond to a previous review of long wait times - this was definitely more of a restaurant experience in terms of pace, not fast food, yet we did receive apps and beverages promptly, without having to wait too long for our meal. We didn't expect to be really impressed by the quality and taste of it all, but we were! From the wonderful little appetizer plate with spicy fruit and peanuts glazed in some kind of soy/sesame/sugar marinade, we knew we were off to a good start. The clay-pot eggplant was sublime, the bitter melon/seitan/mushroom salad was intriguing (and not TOO bitter - just a bit bracing as a counterpoint to some of the richer items we ordered), and the fried banana and mango dessert was sticky and fun and worth saving room for. We ended up eating there twice in our couple days in Hue, and recommend it not only to plant-based diners, but to anyone who would like an interesting and generally well-executed take on locally available foods. But especially for vegans and vegetarians who are desperate to try some of the famous Vietnamese cuisine - do not miss this restaurant! ...Xem thêm
